Kids say the darnedest things

Bria is growing up so fast, and all her new words are amazing! A couple of conversations we had today...

I was in the kitchen and she climbed up on the table, where she ripped the ribbon on a Christmas gift. I said, "Oh darn it, Bria!!" and took her down from the table, then put her on the couch and turned on a movie to try to get her to rest.
She said, "I didn't mean to."
Ha! That surprised me, and I said I know she didn't mean to, but it was still rest time.
"I wish you'd be nice to me."
Sheesh!

A little while later, we were watching a movie and I was sitting next to her on the couch.
"What Daddy?" she said. I kind of laughed to myself, because Daddy is at work!
Then she repeated it.
"What Daddy? I can't hear you Daddy. What Daddy? Mommy, listen." (cups hand over ear to signify listening)
Maybe Daddy is her imaginary friend!

And she picks stuff up so FAST!

Last night we were watching some goofy sketch comedy thing after the other kids had gone to bed, and there was sketch where a guy was standing outside an office "squishing people's heads" from a distance. Bria started saying, "I'm crushing your head! I'm crushing your head!" and copying the action.

We have a couple of foster kids staying with us right now who have been really into paper airplanes lately. Yesterday she saw them making them, and today she was sitting at the table, folding paper to make her own.

Sleeping in her big girl bed

Bria was such a big girl last night -- she slept upstairs in her bedroom, in her Dora bed! The night wasn't completely seamless, but she did so well. We are super proud -- and so is she!

Bria's Halloween

Technically it was her second Halloween, but this was the first Halloween that Bria was really up for the fun. She dressed as a super adorable giraffe.

She LOVED the costume when it came in the mail, and was very proud to try it on. But when we got it out on the day, she totally didn't want to wear it! After putting it on twice, Mom convinced her to leave it on, as long as she didn't have to have the hood on. OK, we can deal with that!

Just like she was resting up for her big night, Bria went down for a nap at 1 p.m. -- totally unheard of in her world -- and was totally ready to go at it by 4! We got all ready, and by the time Daddy got home from work, we were on our way.

Our first stop was the All City Halloween Party at the rec center. She wasn't totally sure at first what she thought, and she made Daddy throw the basketball for her at the first game. But by the second one, she was really digging this carnival thing! She played ring toss and threw bean bags, and ran around in the little Haunted House. And she danced! Oh, how she danced -- she clearly thought that was the best thing! She thought it was so much fun.

After the carnival, we headed over to get some dinner, then we hit the streets to Trick or Treat! We weren't sure how that would go, but she loved it. She very happily ran from house to house, held up her little bag (thank you Tricia for the adorable trick-or-treat bags), and said Trick-or-Treat! Then she was sure to say thank you every time, and lots of bye-byes!!!

When it was time to go home, we had a very happy toddler.

Apparently, we are speaking in

Apparently, we are speaking in complete sentences now. "Mom, I dropped it" and "But I want to drink it!"

Bria's vocabulary

How can she be two weeks shy of one and a half already? That hardly seems possible!

Bria is learning and growing every day, and developing in so many areas, it is incredible to just sit back and watch, and wait to see what she does next!

Her vocabulary is increasing each and every day -- not just with words, but with sign language, too. Her favorite new sign this week is "more," and she is putting them together into sentences, like, "More milk, please."

Some of the other signs she knows are:

Milk
All Done
Thank You
Please
More
Hungry

We are teaching her Mommy and Daddy now, but she doesn't use them much -- which is interesting, because when she likes a sign, she only has to be shown once, and she does it all the time!

At this point, she will repeat just about any word or phrase that is said to her (or around her -- watch out!). That makes it hard to guess how many words she might know, because she'll say pretty much anything!

She is going through a phase where she calls everyone "Mama." Her sisters, family friends, Daddy, lots of people are getting it, especially when she feels like she is in distress or needs something!

Bria loves to sing "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider," and will do the hand motions when she wants to hear the song. She also has a book about the rhyme, and it is one of her favorites to read with Daddy at bed time.

She does still have a pacifier, but when she tries to talk and you say, "Pacifier" or "I can't understand you with that in your mouth," she promptly drops it, because she wants to be understood! So big!

Just a few more minutes, mom?

Snug as a bug in a rug in the hotel bed -- she doesn't want to go ANYWHERE, thank you very much!

Bria's 'do

I have been watching with anticipation as baby's hair gets longer and longer, because I can't wait to do fun things with it! I wanted to have a few fun things to do with it while we are on vacation, so I thought I'd try a few styles and see what we liked.

Two days ago we decided to try out this 'do from Curly Hairdo Ideas.

It didn't go perfectly, but I was pretty pleased for a first try! I did discover as the day went on that one side was FAR more secure than the other, so I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Today we made attempt number two. It's improving!

Bria at 13 months

Bria has been working on her top four teeth for weeks now -- they aren't ALL the way out, but they are definitely useful! That makes eight total, with four on top and four on the bottom.

She is SO busy, and always doing something. She's also a big talker! She will repeat just about any word she hears -- so everyone has to be careful! Luckily most words aren't sticking yet! This morning Daddy asked her if she wanted to go see her friend Piper and she nodded and said, "Yes. Piper." Then she walked around the house for five minutes saying, "Piper, Piper, Piper."

(Mommy is still doing daycare at home, which allows her to be home all day with Bria. This has been really awesome for all of us -- though it has resulted in her being a little clingier to Mommy than we might like! To help get her used to people who are NOT in her family, Bria goes to visit her friends Karli, Sam and Piper one day a week. It has worked out really well, and Bria loves it! Plus she seems to be getting more comfortable with other people, too!)

Bria loves to talk on the phone, and on Skype! Any time she hears a voice on the computer she thinks it is time to play peek-a-boo. It was a lot of fun on New Years to see her get to play peek-a-boo with her Great-Grandmother (Nan) in New Zealand while she was visiting with Gran in Whangaparaoa. And this weekend we are heading to Palm Springs, where Bria will get to play peek-a-boo with Gran in person! Pretty exciting, we'll see how she connects the two!

Over the past few months, Bria has gotten to be a very good sleeper. She sleeps in the bedroom she shares with her foster sister, Jess, cuddled up with her NZ lamby and her special quilt made by Gran. These days she is also sleeping with a stuffed horse she got for her birthday. She usually wakes to nurse sometime in early morning, though that varies a lot. This morning it wasn't until 7:30, other mornings it is 4 or 5. Once she has nursed she usually sleeps in between Mommy and Daddy, which is where she would probably prefer to be sleeping, anyway!
